Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease 2

An emerging threat to our rabbit population

Over the last 5 years a new form of a lethal rabbit virus, Rabbit Haemorrhagic Disease Virus 2, has emerged.

It was first seen in an outbreak in France in 2010 and a large number of rabbits vaccinated against the original RHD virus died. The strain was identified and a vaccine has now been developed, which we are lucky enough to be able to use in Rabbits in the UK under a special license.

RHD2 is a disease with very few symptoms that usually results in rapid death within 1-4 days of exposure. Most owners will never notice any signs their rabbit is unwell, they will just find their Rabbit has died suddenly. This is an extremely upsetting disease.

We have recently had 3 acute deaths that have been confirmed as being due to RHD2 and so would like to urge anyone with a rabbit to contact us as soon as possible to arrange vaccination with this latest vaccine. The standard Myxomatosis and RHD vaccine DOES NOT provide cross protection to this latest strain of RHD2 so even if your rabbits are vaccinated we would advise you to contact us as soon as possible.
